Wildlife Tracking and Awareness Basics
Do you know who eats at your bird feeder at night? Did they leave claw marks? Are they in all the tracks? What is the true difference between dog and cat tracks anyway? And what about these tracks with five toes only on their rear feet?
This program is an introduction to the ancient skills of wildlife tracking and awareness, and focuses on applying these skills to our local wildlife in this bioregion.
As a participant, you will learn to become aware of your landscape in a very intimate way, by learning who lives there, and how to keep track of your observations in a meaningful and practical way. Most importantly, you will learn how to interpret the signs and subtle nuances that all types of wildlife leave as they go about their lives. The art of tracking and the art of awareness are really an extension of the same skill.
The class will teach participants:
- to identify species by their tracks– Clear Print Classification
- how to Sign Track
- the art of Trailing
- the basics of ecology, carrying capacity, wildlife food habits, bahitat requirements, tracking annual cylces and seasonal changes
- common local species and species of interest– to be discussed at length
