Wildflower Identification and Bioregional Studies

Have you ever wondered how it was that First Peoples knew the landscape so well– where this plant grew, where to find clean water, or at what time of the day you would see the deer, in what meadow, where they come from, where they would go afterwards?  This is Landscape Wisdom– Big Picture Thinking.

Studying your home bioregion allows you to understand an entire ecosystem and its interrelatedness– its baseline, so to say– how and why the ABCs of life have shaped the landscape, why and how it functions the way it does…

The principles of ecology applied to a given region are what define it as a bioregion.  Bioregions are delineated by pre-existing natural forms in the ecosystem; climate, soils, geography, human presence, all other plant and animal species, their interrelatedness, and how these elements all work together as a whole is what creates the bioregion.  Becoming native to a place occurs through the development of awareness of the particular ecological relationships that operate within and around it.

To know that everything is related is good. To know the individuals within a particular area is good. To know how these elements fit together symbiotically is ecological wisdom.  Through this class, you will be introduced to wildflower identification and bioregional studies in this holistically integrated fashion. You will also learn how to write your own real-time field guides.
