Bird Language Basics
Learn the voice of the natural world by first learning the baseline activity of bird alarms and other communications. Identifying birds is only the beginning to understanding what they are saying. When and where you hear them call is how to understand what the natural world is saying.
Like the pebble thrown into the pond, a bird calling from a shrub is the initial ripple. Outwards the concentric rings ripple as the robin chirps, flying up to the branch intentfully aware of the sparrow in the low shrub. The sparrow calls loudly, repeatedly, almost as if annoyed. As he continues, you wonder what all the commotion is about, and then you notice the cottontail as it hops out from under the shrub. Then, “sneak!… sneak!” from the other side of the shrub, beyone the cedars, a blue jay scolds. What you don’t see is the red fox sneaking away because you approached. It almost had the cottontail, which eluded it by ducking under the shrub and alerting the sparrow, moments before you arrived on the scene.
The cottontail found refuge under the shrub, but his hiding spot was given away by the sparrow, who alerted the fox… Almost ontop of its prey, the fox stalked closer until it caught a particular scent on the wind. Saliva dripping as it narrowed in on the fuzzy ears under the dogwood, the fox, so close to its dinner, didn’t want to believe your presence. Yet the smell was unmistakable: definitely human.
The sneaking fox, the silent cottontail, and the vocal Sparrow, Robin, and Blue Jay… these animals and birds all fit into the language of nature that is constantly being spoken around us.
