History and Vision – Making Tracks

Since its creation in May 2008, we have strived to uphold the values of teaching in their truest sense. It is with a feeling of Thanksgiving that we acknowledge those who have come before us and given of themselves in order to preserve skills that teach ecological wisdom and inspire community stewardship.  A deep sense of belonging to and oneness with the earth is spawned when wilderness wisdom is integrated into our lives.  It is this sense that keeps us coming back to create similar opportunities for others to learn to emulate this wisdom as stewards of the Earth.  We have learned the inherent value of teaching from a simple observation that many have shared in the past: that no matter how hard you try to be subtle with your effects on the earth, you have an effect nonetheless.  You will always make tracks and there will always be trackers.  It is with this in mind that we choose to passionately teach the skills which help us all to empower the tracks we leave behind.

Community integration is a cornerstone of SSWS’s growth and wellbeing.  The dynamic flow continues to move the community forward, with many hands building and creating a shared vision of regenerative ecological integrity. A personal sense of fulfillment and connection to the earth and our humanity is the natural offshoot of such an arrangement. We encourage students to become as involved as possible beyond their education with us through various programs, courses and events. We create as many avenues as we can to make this involvement and continued growth possible; these include but are not limited to:

-Wilderness Skills Programs

-Apprenticeship Program

Our Camp

As a part of our programs we offer basic accommodation which includes a space to set-up your own tent in wooded area not far from the barn.  As you lay your head down at night, you’ll hear very little but the sounds of the natural landscape and animals and birds that we share this home with.  It is a welcome respite from the busy sounds of the city and other less rural settings.  Not only do you have the opportunity to have a more intimate experience with the natural world, but keeping things simple also allows us to focus our energy on maximizing your learning experience.

We look forward to making tracks with you soon….
