Staff Biographies
     Skeet Sutherland, director and lead instructor, founded Sticks and Stones Wilderness School in 2007. His unique passion for living and breathing the integral life studies of wilderness skills training and stewardship education has proven to be both inspiring and practical to thousands. For over a decade, Skeet has played an active role in the Headwaters Community of southern Ontario through teaching wilderness skills, coordinating stewardship projects and events. When he isn’t teaching, you can find him volunteering his time facilitating the growth of the community through the Headwaters Tracking Club, local Stewardship Projects and helping to coordinate the Headwaters Gatherings in Ontario.      Kate Sutherland is Sticks and Stones’ Communications Director as well as an Instructor. Her BA in Psychology fromConcordia University, coupled with an Ecosystem Management diploma from Sir Sandford Fleming College lays the foundation for her personal philosophies with respect to people and their natural needs. Kate is a firm believer that every adult and child is intrinsically connected to nature and the environment, and can best maximize their health, happiness, and overall human potential through nourishing this relationship.

     Kate is also a singer-songwriter and piano player, and has performed her indie/folk music nationally and internationally. Having been born to a family of artists, Kate studied painting and drawing at university and likes to decorate the musical stage with her original works.

    Kate also makes handmade felted crafts, baby powder, and salves which are available here at Bumble Toes.

     Garrin Carter is Sticks and Stones Director’s Assistant under contract for the 2013 season. Garrin grew up crawling through the creeks and wooded areas around Lake Ontario and Lake Erie but as he got older his wanderings took him to various parts of the world. Garrin has always had a passion for the outdoors and mentoring so when in 2012 he found Sticks and Stones Wilderness School he jumped right into their 7 month apprenticeship program. Since then he has come on as Director/Admin Assistant wherein he writes most of the blog, newsletter, and social media content keeping the world in touch with what we do. Garrin also continues training in wilderness skills and developing his mentoring skills with the Sticks and Stones staff.

Chris Gilmour of Earthmentorship Programs

Alexis Burnett of Earth Tracks

     Alexis Burnett is a Naturalist, Tracker, Wilderness Skills Practitioner and Canoe Guide from Orangeville, ON. He resides in central Ontario, spending his days tracking and running his Outdoor School and Wilderness Canoe Tripping company, Earth Tracks. Alexis is lead guide for the wilderness canoe trips and head instructor for all the programs and classes.

     Alexis has spent significant time learning from wilderness survival and tracking experts such as Tom Brown Jr., Jon Young, renowned Herbalist Rosemary Gladstar and many others.   He has been practicing indigenous skills, pursuing naturalist/tracking studies and guiding canoe trips for over ten years.   Alexis teaches classes both for Earth Tracks as well as through various organizations, for people of all ages.  Some of these workshops have focused on such topics as Wilderness Survival, Wildlife Tracking, Wild Crafting & Herbal Preparations and Naturalist Studies.  Recently he has started the Earth Tracks Tracking and Nature Club located in Grey County and previously ran the Orangeville Tracking and Nature club for seven years.

      Alexis is committed to mentoring and teaching others these skills that help re-connect us to the natural world in an ancient and powerful way. By learning from nature through immersion and direct experience we begin to see and link the inter- relatedness of all things in nature and understand the important role that we all can play in protecting and preserving these things for future generations

     Alexis helps us facilitate the Hide Tanning Workshop and the Way of the Wild – Survival Quest as well as provides the herbalist/plant medicine courses.  Link to Earthtracks.ca

Stew Oliver

     Stew Oliver has been learning ancient earth based skills ever since he was a teenager.  Mentored by a local group of earth skills facilitators within various clubs throughout Ontario, Stew grew up in a community that supported intergenerational learning, the way it was meant to be.  He continued following his passions and began studying with traditional skills leaders throughout North America.  A Stone Mason by trade, Stew has always loved working stone, and has learned the universal language to such a high degree that he is able to teach it like a first language.  Stew facilitates the Flint Knapping series we offer as well as joining us for similar programs such as Stick Bow Building and The Way of The Hunt.

     Jason Secord has extensively studied energy medicine, shamanism, meditation and various healing modalities for most of his adult life. He is also a certified Massage Therapist and Bio-Feedback practitioner. During the past 4 years, he has dedicated much of his time to understanding the practice of Qi-Gong and how mind and emotions interact with the energy of the body.  He has dedicated his life to self-understanding and assisting others in their own journey of self-empowerment. “The more we come to understand ourselves, the more we will understand others and that is the key ingredient in all healing work. And learning never ends thus I will always be a student of life.”  Jason has taught hundreds of workshops with both business and public groups.
